Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils: What’s the Difference?

Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve shopped for candles or room sprays, you’ve probably noticed labels that say “made with essential oils.” It sounds natural, clean, and toxin-free — but most shoppers don’t realize that many of those “essential oil candles” are actually made with fragrance oils, not pure essential oils. The wording often feels intentionally confusing, and some brands use it because it makes their products sound more natural than they really are. At The Homestead Co. in Russia, Ohio, we believe transparency matters. Every candle and room spray we make is hand-poured using clean fragrance oils, and we’re honest about it — because essential oils and fragrance oils are not the same thing.

Essential oils do come from plants, but “natural” doesn’t automatically mean they are the best or safest option for home fragrance. In candles, pure essential oils often burn inconsistently, fade quickly, and can even be irritating for children, pets, or people with sensitivities. They also have a limited scent range, which means you simply can’t create cozy, complex scents like vanilla bourbon, cookies, pumpkin spice, or Christmas tree using only essential oils. That’s why so many companies quietly mix in fragrance oils while still marketing the candle as “essential oil scented.”

Fragrance oils are different. They’re designed specifically for candles and home-fragrance products, offering long-lasting scent and a wider variety of fragrance options. While some fragrance oils on the market contain harsh chemicals, there are clean fragrance oils that are tested and certified to be free from carcinogens, phthalates, and reproductive toxins. Those are the only oils we use at The Homestead Co. Every candle, room spray, and hand soap we pour is made with clean fragrance oils that keep the air in your home safe and comfortable — without the heavy chemical smell that comes from many large commercial brands.

So why do you see so many companies advertising “essential oil candles”? Because it sells. Some brands add a tiny amount of essential oil to a standard fragrance oil base, then label the product as “essential oil scented” even though most of the fragrance comes from fragrance oils. We don’t believe in that kind of greenwashed marketing. We’d rather be transparent, honest, and clear about our ingredients so you always know exactly what you’re bringing into your home.

For families with kids, pets, allergies, asthma, or scent sensitivities, clean fragrance oils can actually be the safer and more reliable choice. They burn beautifully in our tallow and beeswax candles, last longer, smell stronger, and are created to meet strict safety standards. You’ll find them in every product we make — from Christmas candles to everyday scents and seasonal gift sets.

The next time you shop for home fragrance, don’t be afraid to look beyond the label and ask what’s actually inside. “Essential oil candle” doesn’t always mean what it sounds like — but clean fragrance oils can be a safe, trustworthy, and beautifully scented option for your home.
